From graduating with a 2:1 in business and information systems I followed a career in IT and web development. From web-based flight planning software to websites selling late availability flights, hotels and holidays well before the days of Opodo, Travelocity and the like.
The travel industry felt the full impact of the 9/11 terror attacks, the subsequent down turn in the overseas holiday and travel market led me to move away from this industry to pursue fresh opportunities.
After considering numerous IT roles I decided to take the plunge and set up a web development business on my own and strangely learnt my first major finance lesson. “Cash is King”, and I learnt it the hard way. Poor cashflow management put pay to my first fledgling business.
I used that lesson and decided that I needed to understand finance if I was ever to succeed in the future. I took a big step backwards and with the support of my family I found a role as an assistant accountant with a young entrepreneurial educational business and my finance career began.
Over a number of years, I was promoted through several companies with roles that advanced with my studies, from business reporting analyst, sales analyst, marketing accountant, European financial planning manager, management accountant, financial controller.
I qualified with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in 2010 and by this point I was looking after the household brand SaraLee’s marketing investments and the returns on them.
My career has since taken me on a journey with a variety of companies within a number of different sectors from that first finance role in Explore Learning, to a number of well know companies such as SaraLee, Pemier Foods, Cable and Wireless Worldwide. I have experience construction industry finance with Wates Construction and Fund Management and Investments with Octopus Investments.
And now on to a new chapter…
